A Brief History of Tae Kwon Do
Korean Martial Arts had their beginning centuries before the birth of Christ, and developed a great many kinds of
weapons. Every weapon used in combat was included as part of the soldiers’ over-all military training.
In addition to those complex skills, the advantages and possibilities of the body’s natural weapons were not
overlooked, and the skills of unarmed combat were also emphasized. In this manner, a branch of military science
based upon the natural weapons of fists, hands, and feet was established.
First known as Su Bak, and then, over the centuries called Kwon Bup, and then Tae
Kyon,
it was a vital part of a warrior’s training. The name Tae Kwon Do was chosen in 1955 by a group of leaders on
the art, and it was officially adopted by the Republic of Korea in 1965.
Buliding the confidence and discipline to be your best!
Tae Kwon Do is action philosophy, the Korean art of self-defense. Literally translated, it means foot, hand, and art. However, it is much more than kicking and punching. It is designed as a non-violent art system of entire body practice and way of life. It includes physical and mental discipline with a deep philosophy. Through Tae Kwon Do, all practitioners benefit:
Physically - by developing good coordination and strong body.
Mentally - by building self-confidence, gaining good judgment, and developing a sound mind.
Philosophically - by learning to respect others, help others, be honest, and always stand by the weak.
Thus, it is a guide for the formation of outstanding character, a modern world sport, and a philosophy. Tae Kwon Do is the oldest and greatest martial art in the world!
Self-Defense
Self-defense has become more important in recent years. Every person has the power and ability to fight in self-defense, but few truly understand how to use it.
People think of themselves as weak because they do not know how to use their strength. The goal of Tae Kwon Do is to make the individual aware of his/her natural strengths and how to apply them to the greatest advantage.
The many powerful and graceful movements of Tae Kwon Do will enable a person to defend oneself by using any part of the boy, but mostly the brain.
A person, therefore, will develop self-confidence because of the power and ability that has been mastered. This self-confidence can be carried over to all aspects of life.
